The following are the candidates for the 2025 Executive Board Elections. The candidate statement order has been randomized for candidates running for the same office.

Candidate forum recording:

Secretary

Lu Liu

(he/him)

April 2024, I was traveling with a fellow Googler who was just fired in retaliation for merely wearing a t-shirt during the Project Nimbus protest; a week later, I came back to NYC to the layoffs of 4 teammates. I felt frustrated and heartbroken, but it also lit a fire in me which I channeled into rebuilding our New York chapter.

During the East Coast leadership summit a couple months later, I talked to fellow members from Pittsburgh about their job security petition and how they expanded membership and organizing capacity with it. Feeling inspired, the small NY “reset” organizing committee decided to join forces with other east coast chapters on a coordinated campaign around our coworkers’ most pressing issues. After months of running union forums and getting buy-in, we officially launched our campaign this past January.

Today, the Googlers for Job Security campaign has grown into a movement across offices in the US/Canada. We’ve secured Voluntary Exit Programs (VEPs) for more than 60,000 workers, and I’m seeing fresh growth and energy in New York and beyond. Witnessing this transformation is what motivates me to run for secretary.

But our fight does not stop here. From the beginning, we saw this campaign as a crucial step towards a much larger goal: building collective power with all Alphabet workers, TVCs and FTEs, to hold the bosses accountable, because this is the only way to make this company a workplace where we have a real say, are free from constant fear of retaliation or layoffs, and are treated with dignity. We have a lot of work ahead, and if elected, my top priorities will be:

  • Empower Members to Build Organizing Skills: my favorite quote on organizing is from the great labor educator Jane McAlevey: “Winning matters - so having some appreciation of the method and the skill really matters”. Our recent campaign success was built on relational organizing and one-on-one conversations, but I have first-hand experience that these skills are learned and not automatic. As secretary, I will ensure our members have access to training, mentorship, and shared best practices needed to become an effective organizer and win;
  • Grow Our Membership and Power: Our collective strength lies in our numbers. I will focus on strategically connecting our issue-based campaigns with direct asks to join the union, turning widespread support into sustainable organizing capacity that will enable us to run stronger actions with greater numbers.

I’m running alongside Meghan Day (of PIT) for treasurer and Emma Jackson (of SFO) for communications chair. As active members of our respective chapter’s organizing committee, we want to strengthen the connection between our union’s leadership and the weekly organizing conversations we have with coworkers, and hope you’ll vote for us in this election.

Treasurer

Meghan Day

My name is Meghan Day and I have been a Software Engineer in Google Shopping for over 7 years. I joined Alphabet Workers Union in November 2021, and I have been an active member of the organizing committee (OC) for the Pennsylvania chapter since November 2022. I have been organizing with the Googlers for Job Security campaign since it began in Pittsburgh, and I am running for Treasurer because I am deeply committed to continuing to build our union’s strength and winning a larger voice for workers at Alphabet.

The January 2023 layoffs came only a few months after I joined the Pennsylvania OC. The abrupt dismissal of valued colleagues in a manner lacking respect or appreciation for their work was a clear demonstration of the need for Alphabet workers to have a more meaningful say in company decisions. At the end of 2023, I helped conduct a Pennsylvania-chapter-wide survey that led to launching the Googlers for Job Security Campaign. This campaign grew from a local Pittsburgh effort into the now union-wide initiative that has won VEPs for at least 60,000 Googlers so far. It is exciting to see this momentum building, and it makes the possibility of achieving greater improvements to our working conditions ever more tangible.

As Treasurer, I would bring my years of organizing experience with Alphabet Workers Union, a strong sense of optimism for our future, and a highly organized and analytical mindset. I also bring with me a sense of duty and care towards members' dues that I developed while interning for Service Employees International Union. I currently serve as Dues Manager on the Finance committee for Steel City Roller Derby, giving me some experience with organizational finances. If elected, my goals would be to effectively use our resources to build our union and win change and to increase opportunities for member engagement in all areas of how our union functions, including the budget.

I am running alongside Lu Liu (for Secretary) and Emma Jackson (for Communications Chair). As active members of our respective organizing committees, together we represent a vision of a union built and led by its membership. I would be honored to earn your vote for Treasurer.

Yurie Murayama

We use a lot of words to describe ourselves here. TVCs and FTEs, SWEs and Staff, Raters and Super Raters, Organizing and Operations. This makes sense, since we’re all different from each other, coming from diverse and diasporic backgrounds and developing our own thoughts, opinions, and ideals. But whatever labels are given to us, we are workers, and workers deserve respect.

I am a TVC, a vendor, a Gemini speech evaluator, a not-our-employee assigned to the xWF-only Brokaw Campus in SJC. These are the words Google uses to describe me. My name is Yurie Murayama, and I’ve been an AWU member since 2022, focusing on TVCs’ rights, No Tech For Apartheid, and the Budget Committee. These are the words I use to describe myself. And these are the words I use to describe what I believe in: I want to create a world that respects, protects, and appreciates the people who actually do the work.

Come November 1st, I will have served on the Budget Committee for a full year. In that time, I’ve learned a lot: what ideals go into a budget, what rules constrain it, how reality complicates it, and how to form those big words and crunchy numbers into a coherent shape that other people see and say “I get it”. I’ve been taught much, not only by TVCs and FTEs, but by our staff and ex-members too. But a budget isn’t just numbers or words, a budget is a plan to turn our collective dreams into a shared reality. I’d love to use these skills to the fullest, to take the next step by becoming Treasurer so I can better support you, our members, our staff, and all those potential members out there who haven’t joined us yet.

I know I’ve got the flexibility to endure the tough times just as I have the strength to be kind. In my 6 years at Google, I’ve made myself known to my team as someone who can tackle what we’re afraid of, no matter how daunting the fight. Through AWU, I’ve testified my work conditions to state assembly members in Sacramento, protested against militaries purchasing our work in San Francisco, and continued the work of all our previous members of Budget Committee. I stand now as the only member of Budget Committee not counted among Executive Board or Staff, bookkeeper or CPA . I am ready to step up and take on more responsibility, to do more with what we have. I ask not only for your vote but for your trust in me to build a framework that will house our union, to turn our resources into power and protection for the people who actually do the work. I ask that you vote for me to become your Treasurer.

Communications Chair

Adam Tessier

Fellow members,

We are a union that achieves incredible things. The recent Job Security Campaign is proof, securing Voluntary Exit Packages (VEPs) for over 60,000 of our colleagues. But the value of a victory is multiplied when it is shared, understood, and used to inspire further action. Right now, too many of our potential allies, right here in our own workplace, don't know the power we are building together.

I am running for Communications Chair because it is critical that we tell our own story to build our power. My vision is for a communications strategy that is both proactive and responsive. We will publicize our wins to prove to every current and potential member that our collective action creates real, tangible change. At the same time, we must be prepared. When the company makes a change for the worse, we need to respond instantly, countering their narrative, utilizing our connections with news outlets, and showing our colleagues that we are always ready to fight for them.

I have the experience to make this vision a reality. For the past year, I’ve served on both the Mountain View and International Organizing Committees, turning strategy into action. In these roles, I have honed my skills as a writer and public speaker, rallying our members at chapter meetings and campaign events. I also stepped forward to represent our union in the media by volunteering for an interview with More Perfect Union. Most importantly, I have a track record of using our story to grow our ranks: by clearly communicating our Job Security Campaign wins in 1-on-1 conversations, I have successfully convinced colleagues to join our fight and become members.

Let's build a communications strategy that turns our current wins into future victories. I would be honored to have your support.

Emma Jackson

I’m Emma Jackson, I work as a UX Program Manager in San Francisco on the Products for All team in Core and serve on the San Francisco Organizing Committee.

When I joined Google 21 years ago, it was a small start up with big dreams that I bought into. It was truly exciting to hear about new products that would make life easier for so many people. But over time, like many of you, I watched in dismay as leadership decisions put profit before people.

In response, I have spent a lot of my time, even before the union existed, working to build collective power with my coworkers. I helped organize to oppose military contracts, protested retaliation targeting my coworkers, advocated for climate action, and participated in the women's walkout, among other efforts. I also tried to make a difference through authorized channels as a Program Manager, working on initiatives like Diversity, Privacy, and now Accessibility, always aiming to keep the company true to its now abandoned "don't be evil" motto.

But what I've learned from all those experiences—both the grassroots organizing and the official roles—is that only building our union can create the lasting, meaningful change we need and deserve as workers. That is why I am running for Communications Chair in the Alphabet Worker’s Union (AWU).

My vision for communications for AWU is to have concise and compelling narratives that demonstrate why we are fighting, in a way that is relatable and builds broad support. We need a strong comms committee that can ensure members' voices and stories are represented in the media and internally. I wrote about why I’m in this fight in The Nation earlier this year and have shared perspectives in videos with More Perfect Union and Labor On the Line.

As a long time community organizer here in the Bay Area I have deep connections with coalition partners and labor organizations who I can lean on for support in this role if elected.

This is our moment and our path forward has never been clearer. With AWU, we have an unprecedented chance to steer Big Tech onto a better course. We're not just fighting for our jobs; we're seizing the power to ensure our work is valued, our careers are safe, and our technology is used to truly benefit all of society.

I’m proud to be running alongside Lu Liu for Secretary and Meghan Day for Treasurer, please support us so we can continue the work to grow our union and build power for Google workers.

TVC Chair

Kirn Gill II

I’m Kirn Gill II, and I ask for your vote for TVC Chair on the AWU executive board. I am a Rater with TELUS Digital and have been an AWU member for one year. I know firsthand that contractor arrangements create distinct experiences and needs that can be overlooked when bargaining and governance focus primarily on on-site FTE concerns.

As a Rater, I am often treated as nothing more than a number by faceless management who pay lip service to worker well-being but fail to follow through in practice. That experience has made clear to me how easy it is for TVCs to feel invisible. Our concerns are not identical to those of FTEs, and without active advocacy, our voices risk being sidelined in union affairs.

I am running to make sure temps, vendors, and contractors have a direct, practical voice in union decisions and negotiations. My priorities are: (1) ensure TVC needs are explicitly included in bargaining agendas and in any agreements that affect work conditions; (2) build sustained outreach and organizing for geographically distant TVCs — including Raters at GlobalLogic, RWS, TELUS Digital, and WeLocalize, and YouTube moderators at Accenture — so their concerns shape union policy; and (3) strengthen two-way communication between TVCs and the union so members know their concerns are heard and addressed.

I am also strongly vested in the interests of TVCs closer to FTEs, those that work on-site, on-corp. I hear your grievances on matters like RTO mandates and the cut-off of Google’s on-site benefits, such as free cafeteria and shuttle access. These measures are clearly an attempt by Google to avoid, at all costs, the appearance of joint-employment, thereby sidestepping any obligation to negotiate directly in a potential collective bargaining agreement. I will advocate to ensure these concerns are considered alongside broader union priorities.

I will coordinate with FTE representatives to pursue equitable inclusion wherever possible. My goal is simple: make sure TVC issues are raised early in discussions and that union decisions are communicated in ways that address our circumstances. My Discord is always open for members to reach me directly with questions or concerns.

Please vote for me for TVC Chair. I will show up, consult widely, and make the union work for everyone under the Alphabet sphere, not just FTEs.

Mitchell Kernot

I’ve been part of the Accenture campaign since late 2021. Thanks to my union and my incredibly dedicated coworkers I’ve gotten experience campaigning as a member of our Organizing Committee, negotiating as a member of our Bargaining Committee, and now working on ongoing contract enforcement as a member of our Labor Management Committee. I’m proud to run for the opportunity to use that experience for the benefit of our broader union, and the TVC campaigns growing throughout it.

Contractor campaigns face an intense struggle as the political and industrial landscape incentivizes harsher union busting and stripped protections. It’s a critical time to fight for a vision of the future that serves Google’s workers at all levels.

The TVC chair position is the result of incredible advocacy and generosity from TVC organizers and the Executive Board, and I’m excited to be a candidate for bringing it to life. My vision for the position is to be a nexus of information that TVCs and FTEs alike can use to learn more about their coworkers and their shared struggles.

The days when corporations like Google can escape scrutiny by outsourcing positions out of sight and out of mind must end, and I want to be part of making that happen.

The fates of FTE and TVC workers are inextricably linked, and that’s just part of why I’m so grateful to be part of a union that supports us as one unit. The worse our pay, benefits, and working conditions get, the better an idea it is to outsource FTE work. The more our protections and power grow, the more we can be a bulwark against arbitrary layoffs and haphazard policy.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions, or just to say hi!
