The Alphabet Workers Union strongly opposes the mandatory layoffs taking place across UX (User Experience) related roles in the Cloud product area this week. These mandatory layoffs not only blindside and devastate our affected coworkers, but also contribute to an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty for everyone at Alphabet.

We know that the best part of working at Google is the people we work with. That’s why it’s disheartening to see management repeatedly put profits above our co-workers through these decisions, and that’s why we started the Googlers for Job Security campaign.

Googlers for Job Security counted a win earlier this year when product areas across the company chose to offer voluntary buyouts before layoffs to over 60,000 Googlers. We call on the Cloud product area to adopt this common-sense measure that grants workers greater agency over our working conditions. Many of our affected UX coworkers are more vulnerable to the effects of mandatory layoffs because there are fewer transfer options within the company for these roles, and hiring managers expect to see a portfolio of work they no longer have access to create.

Moments like these are exactly why AWU members have been publicly organizing as Googlers for Job Security since January. Over 2,000 of us have already committed to the fight for severance as leave, voluntary layoffs, guaranteed severance, and no GRAD quotas. Together, we can build the power to win job security for all of us. We call on all Googlers who agree with these demands to join our campaign and sign our petition at https://go.awu.fyi/job-security-letter
