After learning that the Pentagon has demanded that Anthropic abandon all AI safety guardrails in their contract with the U.S. military – and that Anthropic has refused to capitulate to these demands – the elected Executive Board of the Alphabet Workers Union released the following statement:

“Tech workers are united in our stance that our employers should not be in the business of war. This is a deeply held belief by Alphabet workers across our union, which we reiterated in December 2025 when Google announced its partnership bringing Gemini to the U.S. Department of War. In recent years, the company’s 2018 AI Principles have been all but abandoned alongside a complete lack of transparency over whether individual workers are contributing to military applications through our work. Now, many of us worry that if put in a similar position to Anthropic, Google would capitulate to the Pentagon’s demands. The only way we can ensure this doesn’t happen and confront these issues with enough power is by building a strong, fighting union. If this latest standoff between the Pentagon and Anthropic angers you and makes you scared about whether Google is next, we urge you to turn that fear into action. Join the Alphabet Workers Union and organize with us. It is through building sustained worker power that we can truly have a say over our direct working conditions and the impact that our work has on the world.”

The Alphabet Workers Union joins with our allies in Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, No Tech for Apartheid, Communications Workers of America (CWA), United Tech and Allied Workers - Google DeepMind (UK), Amazon Labor Union - IBT Local 1, United Videogame Workers — CWA Local 9433, and No Azure for Apartheid in signing on to our joint statement and in calling on our employers to reject the Pentagon’s advances and provide workers with transparency about contracts with state agencies including DHS, CBP, and ICE.
