Googlers for Job Security

Status Update (Sept 9, 2025): This year after our organizing, voluntary exit packages (VEPs) have been offered to over 60,000 Googlers, giving individual Googlers more agency and significantly reducing layoffs. As Sundar said, leadership responded because thousands of Googlers like you spoke up. But we’re not done yet – we're still growing our movement so we can win stronger policies!

Dear Sundar,

We, the undersigned Google workers from offices across the US and Canada, are concerned about instability at Google that impacts our ability to do high quality, impactful work.

Ongoing rounds of layoffs make us feel insecure about our jobs. The company is clearly in a strong financial position, making the loss of so many valuable colleagues without explanation hurt even more. Additionally GRAD, Google’s performance review system, encourages a particular distribution of ratings over employees rather than considering our individual merit. This erodes our confidence that we will be recognized for high quality and impactful work.

We are requesting the following changes to company policy:

  • Guaranteed severance: Every laid off worker must receive a guaranteed minimum severance package equal to the packages offered in January 2023.
  • Buyouts before layoffs: Voluntary layoffs must be offered before performing involuntary layoffs. Buyouts must offer at least the guaranteed severance package.
  • No GRAD quotas: Ratings must be given based on performance and cannot be given or changed to achieve a forced distribution.

We understand that difficult decisions are sometimes necessary for the good of the business, but we believe that they can be made in a way that is more equitable for workers.

We celebrate Google’s historic culture of ownership of solutions by workers, and hope that you will engage with us in the spirit of making Google a better place to work for everyone. We are requesting that you acknowledge receipt of this letter and respond to our demands within two weeks of its delivery.

Sincerely,

<the undersigned>
